The stenographer workforce is shrinking fast. Only about 23,000 stenographers remain in the United States — a 21% decline over the past decade — and the pipeline isn't replacing them. With roughly 1,120 reporters retiring each year against only about 200 new entrants, the shortage compounds annually.
The result is felt in every scheduling email: around 76% of legal teams report difficulty booking court reporters, and in California alone over 1.2 million hearings went unrecorded in a recent 10-month period.
